Geological report- Geologist Faan Kruger MsC reported on the geology of 3 Oosthuizen koppie (excluding the street surface) -
Quartzite is characterized by its extreme hardness and resistance to weathering. It is a very durable rock type that should serve as a stable base for construction purposes.
Geological observations relating to the stability of the rock formation occurring on Erf 138, Floracliffe, Roodepoort
Request: A geological opinion relating to the stability of the rock formation surfacing on the above mentioned property.
Geological Observations: The rock formation present on Erf 138 belongs to the West Rand Group of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. This Supergroup is a thick sequence of shales, quartzites and conglomerates. The lower part of the West Rand Group is characterized by thick layers of shaley material with interstitial quartzites. As time passes shale layers weather faster than the harder quartzites which then forms prominent ridges. Thick layers of quartzite are a common phenomenon on the northern side of the ridges that run generally in a east-west direction on the West Rand.
Only one rock type, namely quartzite, could be identified by its surface characteristics on stand 138. This quartzite has a tan to reddish colour which is prominent on the eastern side of the property. The quartzite band continues on the western side of William Nicol Drive.
The quartzite band dips steeply towards the south at an angle of generally 80° or slightly more. Quartz veins are conspicuous in the quartzite and are characterized by its white colour.
